Historical Regatta in Venice

History, Tradition and Spectacle on the Grand Canal

A Unique Event in the World

The Historical Regatta of Venice is one of the city’s most anticipated events of the year. Every first Sunday of September, the Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Basin turn into an extraordinary stage where history, tradition, and sporting passion blend in an unforgettable atmosphere.

The Highlight of the Venetian Calendar

The Historical Regatta is the beating heart of the annual Venetian rowing races. The event features four official competitions, divided by age and type of boat, contested aboard traditional Venetian craft—light, agile and fast—rowed by two or more oarsmen.

The most followed race is the Regatta of the gondolini: slender boats speeding along the Grand Canal to the finish line in front of Ca’ Foscari Palace, marked by the scenic machina, a floating stage framing the spectacular finale. Around it, a festive crowd of locals and visitors cheers on the rowers, while St. Mark’s Basin and the Grand Canal fill with boats of every kind.

The Historical Parade: Venice in Costume

The event opens with the enchanting historical parade, featuring dozens of brightly decorated boats and gondoliers in costume. The parade reenacts the grandeur of the Serenissima, with the Doge, the Dogaressa, and Caterina Cornaro, evoking the 1489 celebration when the Queen of Cyprus ceded her throne to the Republic of Venice.

In the past, the bissone (parade boats) also served a public order role: from their bows, patricians would hurl terracotta balls (balote) at unruly boats—the same projectiles used in lagoon bird hunting. A curious detail that reflects the Venetian spirit of combining order with spectacle.

Atmosphere and Emotions

Taking part in the Historical Regatta means immersing yourself in an event that unites sport, tradition, and folklore. The colors of the boats, the period costumes, the energy of the rowers, and the enthusiasm of the crowd transform the city into an open-air theatre, celebrating the history and identity of Venice.
